Getting Started With Channels

channels

A channel is a highly configurable instant-messaging group chat that people can join as opposed to being individually added. If you're new to this platform, if someone is not in the channel then they don't see the messages. Channels are usually named by some kind of general interest. It is popular on IRC for people to run their own channel as a "bar" - imagine a bar if you want. IRC is popular among people who are technically minded or contributors of any kind of group computer science related project. Also ...

encrypted from end to end & not saved anywhere

This platform leaves no conversations to "go through" lying around to be dredged through like a deep sea trawler, to be agonised over / blown out of context ... unless you go out of your way to keep records of everything everyone might type, nothing that's said in a channel or even privately is stored on your device / backed up on our servers anywhere. if you're not there at the time, the moment will be gone. you might not appreciate that people join channels instead of being added. don't be sad ... you can make channels invite only - plus you can make all sorts of little spin-off channels, you can join multiple channels / chat up multiple users. and you don't even have to throw in your real name

controlling a channel

If you have created / registered a channel then you own it. You decide what the settings are, how much privileges you give to your friends. It's got a lot of settings like that, everything you need to start up an online community - available 24h.

So you pick a nickname that's unique to you ... just tell each other what the channel name to type is. An unlimited number of people [unless you decide to limit that number] can all put the same channel in and once connected they will be instantly linked to one another. This was invented before web pages even existed. It really is that simple...
