our network services
a nickname or a channel becomes available again when it is no longer in use. when you go offline or change your nickname, anyone can instantly start going by the same name. if you rejoin a channel you created and other people are inside, you will not be given back your channel operator status from when you first created it. this can be quite frustrating or inconvenient when it happens, and staying constantly connected / in channel is more difficult than you might think.

you can deal with all of this by registering your nickname with services. all you need is a password and a valid email address

registration process
while you are using the nickname that you would like to be known by, you can start the registration by using the /register command. this is a fully automated process, and doesn't cost anything. accounts are limited to 1 per email address. you can add other nicknames you may use to the account when you have completed the registration process

/register <password> <email address>

go into the process with more detail, click here

once you have submitted these details, an email will be sent to the address you provided. your nickname will be reserved, and you are given 24 hours to submit the confirmation code, that will be included in the email. it may end up in your junk mail, so have a look in there if you have not been able to find it

if you do not submit your confirmation code within this 24 hour period, your nickname will be released and become available for anyone to use again. you will be able to start the registration process again if this happens, but so would anyone else

your details
we do not require or store anything that can be used to associate your account name or details with your real name and can not at any time personally identify you. we do not store your password at all, do not need it, will never ask you for it. you can delete your account instantly, at any time, and it can not be recovered by us or anyone else. although you can associate your website / social media accounts with your registered nickname, you will have ultimate control of what you wish to display in info look ups by other users: /nickserv help set hide

here are some useful commands that work with services

service command description details

nickserv /nickserv cert add associate a TLS certificate fingerprint with your account if you are connected using a TLS certificate, which will be visible in your /whois info, then you can automatically log in whenever you use this certificate; infinitely more secure than using a password
nickserv /nickserv drop <your nickname> completely remove your nickname / account permanently if for any reason you no longer wanted a nickname in your group / your account name to exist, this command will remove it completely, this can not be undone and also removes all of your access to channel(s) that you own / have been given privileges on

these commands are not a complete list and offered as a guide only

serving suggestion: speak in confidence
if you are a service user of any charity / organisation(s), you can choose to let them verify your identity using /nickserv info <yournickname> and checking the email address. this may be useful if you are the victim of crime, for instance. because your conversations will not be retrievable by us, nor our web chat client. if you have any questions about this, join #help and we can go through this for you

this is one example of how you can speak in confidence securely, without us needing / having any of your personal information; or knowing your name. there are most likely many others, you can accomplish using such an arrangement
