creating an account

when you are registered your nickname will be protected and no one but you will be able to use it
you can also create and run registered channels

3 simple steps ...
[1. Use Register Command]
[2. Get the Email]
[3. Submit Confirmation Code]

thereafter ... (once you are registered)
[1. Logging In]
[2. Identify With Nickserv]
[3. What Happens if You Don't]

the register command:
/register yourpassword emailaddress
use a one word password, and an email address that you have access to

your email address will be needed to complete registration, and to change certain settings etc.

this is an example in the web version. you can use /register on any chat client
when you have done this, you will be sent an email with a confirmation code

an error message that you will see if you register too quickly
you must be using your nickname for at least 45 minutes before you may register

verify your email

when your password and email address have been accepted, you will get a reply from nickserv like this ...

a services response asking that you confirm your email address
your nickname will be reserved for 24 hours to use the confirmation code that will be sent to your email address

go to your email inbox. you will have a new email which looks like this ...

you will be able to copy the whole command from your email: /ns CONFIRM UM5ea1m88
obviously your confirmation code will likely differ. when you have copied the command, go back to your chat client

you put the command with the confirmation code in any editbox, just as you did with /register
/ns is just a shortcut for /nickserv [it does the exact same thing]

when you have completed this process, services will recognise you as registered
this will give you complete access to all services, enable you to join registered-only channels, and so on ...

REMEMBER: from now on when you connect, you must use your password!
you can use your password via the "i have a password" option, which can be selected on the initial screen

logging in to your account

you can log in during the connection process using your password, or a TLS certificate

once your nickname is registered, your email is verified, your account will be protected
you must log in using your password, which you can do via the I have a password option, from the web browser at least

if you do not log into your account, your nickname will be forcably changed. nickserv [the account service] will also hold your registered nickname, so that it can not be used by anyone [even you] for a long period of time, unless you use one of the the RELEASE, RECOVER, GHOST commands which require your password

most web browsers [on any device] will be able to save your nickname and password allowing you to use a securely generated one
you will be logged in to your account / have your settings applied before the server even shows you're online

we do not store your password. we will never ask you for your password. we don't need it. keep it safe. do not give it to anyone!

not logging in

if you connect without a password, or change your nickname to a registered one, you can log in using the /id command
this command will identify you with nickserv

you must do this before you do anything else, or you will be treated as an unauthorised user

there are consequences for using a registered nickname without logging in, even for yourself
however, if you don't use your password to connect / you use your own chat client (i.e. not our web version), it is still possible to log in

messages shaded in this beige colour are private messages and can only be seen by you

depending on the settings you choose with nickserv, you are given an opportunity to use your password when:
(a) you begin using a /nick that belongs to an account you are not already logged into
(b) you've just connected to the server without using password / client TLS certificate [SASL] during connection process

if you have forgotten / are unable to login during connect, you can use the /id command. Example:
/id ¿?Pa55-w0Rd¿? (obviously you should instead use your own password)

if you haven't identified with nickserv, you will not be able to use privileges / powers on registered channels [even in your own channels!], nor speak in registered-message only [channel mode +M] channels, nor join registered-only [channel mode +R] channels, nor directly message another uaccepting messages from registered users ony [user mode +R] until you have satisfied nickserv that the account is yours, generally by using the /id command

logging in after connecting?
/id <password>

if you don't log in

if you don't log in with password / TLS certificate during connect, or identify with nickserv in the time allowed, you will be treated as an unauthorised user who is trying to use a nickname which doesn't belong to them. by default, if you haven't changed this setting since you registered, you will have 60 seconds to log in with your password. you have three options here ... (a) log in using the /id command within the time limit nickserv tells you, (b) change your nickname to something else using the /nick command, or (c) close, disconnect, or /quit before the time limit is up

when you run out of time

if you change your nickname to something else or quit before the 1 minute opportunity to log in expires, then nickserv will not move in to protect it. if you do run out of that time, the first thing that nickserv will do is - as you can see here in these examples - change your nickname to a guest nickname. guest nicknames cannot be registered, so this is why they are used by default when you first see the log on screen of the web browser client. however, if the time runs out and your nickname is changed with nickserv, it will also put a services hold on your nickname. this is done to protect your name from being used by someone who doesn't have access to it. as per this example [right], you can't just change it back

nickserv isn't that dumb either, and if you try to connect using the nickname alone your connection attempts will fail. when there is a services hold on your nickname, you won't even be able to log in - even if you use the correct password. fear not, there is a solution to all of this, and it's quite simple ... log in using an unregistered nickname. to give guide consistency, we'll call him: ernie

Releasing Your Nickname
from a services hold

if you see the error message "Being held for registered user" it means that you [or someone else] failed to log in and it has been made unusable for a fixed [and undisclosed] period of time. if this happens, simply connect under a different nickname and use the command: /nickserv recover <nickname> <password>

once you have recovered your nickname, you will still have to log in when you start using your nickname again
but apart from? it's as simple as that
