commands to the server start with a forward '/' slash

NB: commands to services are easier if you use a private conversation i.e. /query nickserv help
user commands
you can invoke a list of user commands by going to your server messages and using /helpop usercmds

/ID | /id <password> | submits your account password to log in when you have connected with / changed to your registered nickname(s) | you should do this before you do anything else or your nickname will be changed and held by services |
/AWAY | /away smoke break | marks you away from keyboard. use /away on its own to clear the message | when you are away from keyboard |
/CYCLE | /cycle #channelname | part from #channelname and then attempt rejoin it again | built in to many chat clients |
/INVITE | /invite <nickname> <#channel> | sends an invitation to nickname to join #channel | channels can be set to invite only |
/JOIN | /join <#channel> [password] | joins #channel (or creates it, if it doesn't exist) | password is only required when one is set on the channel |
/PART | /part <#channel> [so long suckers] | leaves the channel with an optional parting message | it's not polite to spam channels using a part message |
/KICK | /kick <#channel> <nickname> [a bad example to us all] | removes nickname from #channel [with an optional reason message] | requires half-operator status [%] or higher in the channel |
/KNOCK | /knock <#channel> [let me in] | requests an invite into an invite-only channel | can only be used when channel is invite only |
/MODE | /mode <#channel> <+o or -o> [mode parameter] | sets or removes modes on a channel. determines how channel behaves, or gives/takes user permissions | to give voice status: /mode #channel +v nickname |
/NICKSERV | /nickserv help register | sends commands and associated things to nickserv | nickserv is the user account registration / management service |
/CHANSERV | /chanserv topic <#channel> set this is a channel topic message | sends channel settings or actions to chanserv | chanserv is the registered channel config / protection service |
/HOSTSERV | /hostserv request some.vanity.hostname.com | sends commands and requests to hostserv | hostserv handles registered users' automated vHost requests & activation |
/MEMOSERV | /memoserv send <nickname> please can you call me when you get this message | sends and receives messages to and from registered users | memoserv sends and delivers messages to your nick or channel, whether the recipient is online or not |
/WHOIS | /whois <nickname> | asks the server for information about a user who is online | can only query a nickname that is currently online |
/ME | /me does a lil dance | performs an 'action' in the channel you are typing to | alternative form of channel message |
/WHOWAS | /whowas <nickname> | asks the server for information about a user who is no longer online | this can retrieve multiple instances of a previously used nickname |
/MSG | /msg <nickname | #channel> hello world | sends a message on a channel / or a private message to a nickname | private messages to users can not be accessed by anyone when you use a secure connection |
/NOTICE | /notice <nickname | #channel> high! how are you | you can use status symbols to message all operators on a channel like this: /notice @#channel how u doin? for example will send a private message to everyone who is a channel operator [+o / @] or higher on the given channel | either sends a private message to nickname, or a private message to all nicknames on #channel |
